HC temporarily restores DC Islamabad’s MPO powers

ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday temporarily restored the powers of deputy commissioner of the city to issue an order for detention of any person under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

A two-member IHC bench comprising Justice Aamer Faroor and Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangir issued the order on appeals filed by the chief coimmissioner and others against a single-bench’s ruling.

The bench has suspended the single-bench’s order to declare the MPO powers of the DC illegal, and issued notices to the parties.

Justice Babar Sattar had declared the DC’s authority to issue the MPO order for detention of a person illegal and barred the officer from issuing it.

The chief commissioner, secretary interior had filed intra-court appeals against the single-bench’s verdict.
