Indonesia has a variety of vefetable dish that are similar to vegetable salads. Let’s take a look at some of them.
• Urap
Urap can be found mainly in East Java. It consists of boiled vegetables mixed with grated coconut which has been seasoned with kencur (aromatic ginger), turmeric, shallots, garlic, chilies, and shrimp paste. Vegetable that are usually used in Urap include string beans, water spinach, sprouts
• Karedok
Karedok is a common West Javanese food, specifically in Sundanese areas. It consists of fresh vegetables such as cabbage, bean sprouts, cucumber, long beans and basil leaves. These vegetables are coated with spicy peanut sauce. Karedok is usually eaten with rice cake or rice.
• Pecel
What distinguishes Pecel and Karadok is that the vegetables used in Pecel must be boiled first. After boiled, the vegetables are then poured with peanut sauce. A Plate of Pecel usually has long beans, cabbage, water spinach, tofu, tempeh, and sprouts. The people of East Java typically consume Pecel with rice, side dishes, and peyek (deep-fried savaoury Javanese cracker).
• Gado-Gado
The main difference between Gado-Gado and other “Indonesian salads” is that the Gado-Gado is a combination of raw and boiled vegetables. In a plate of Gado-Gado, you can also find a mix of boiled potatoes, tempeh, and tofu to enrich the texture and taste, added with delicious peanut sauce.
