ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The 720MW Karot Hydropower Project (HPP), first hydropower project under the CPEC, has begun trial operations after two of its four units/turbines generated 360MW of power on a test-run basis. The project’s unofficial commercial operation (power generation by all four units) will commence on June 25, with the third and fourth units following suit in the next few days, clearing the way for the prime minister’s inauguration on June 30. According to a source within the Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB), the third unit will be operational within the next ten days, and the fourth unit will be operational by June 15. By June 25, all of the units would begin unofficial commercial operation. In addition, the Karot project was supposed to be finished in August. However, the project team was able to complete it by June 30—two months ahead of schedule—due to the rapid completion of various phases.
