Islamabad (Special Report): In early June, the successful breakthrough of Diversion Tunnel No.2 at Diamer Basha Dam Project under construction by PowerChina-FWO is an important milestone of the project. It marks that the excavation of diversion tunnel has entered the final finishing phase and will soon enter the concrete construction stage.
The length of Diversion Tunnel No.2 is 957.1m, including inlet transition section, tunnel section and outlet reinforced section. The width of the tunnel is 16m, and height is 16.9m.
Since the Diversion Tunnel No.2 was excavated, it encountered many shear zones. PowerChina attached great importance to the allocation of tunnel resources and fully mobilized the enthusiasm of employees, which effectively ensured orderly progress in all areas of work and safety during construction.
After completion, Diamer Basha Dam Project will provide 18 billion KWh of clean and cheap electricity and 10 billion cubic meters of profit storage capacity every year, which is of great significance to downstream agricultural irrigation and new hydroelectric power generation, prevent flood hazards, promote the development of related construction industry, increase employment opportunities and promote local economic development.
